Andrew and I went on a 10 mile hike through the NJ Pine Barrens on Saturday and packed all the essentials: oreos, animal crackers, peanut butter and bread.
I also brought something that I knew would perk us up mid-hike: Starbucks new ready brew instant coffee VIA. We found a spot in the shade and used some smartwater to brew a packet of the Italian Roast. The coffee dissolved pretty instantly, but we shook it for good measure (creating the foam you see).
Our water wasn’t hot either, and it was about 35 degrees out so we had ourselves a nice refreshing iced/cold coffee for the last 5 miles.
We both agreed that it didn’t taste any different than the coffee you get from a brick-and-mortar Starbucks. In fact, I think it tastes better because the intensity reminded me more of an Americano. I think the best part is that you can manipulate the concentration of the drink by adding more water, so I recommend starting with about 6-7oz of water and working your way up until you get something that has the right bite but not too much of a stinging aftertaste. (Some people have said that it was too strong or had a metal aftertaste…add more water! Others said it was too mild…use less water! I don’t have a chemistry degree but I think that’s the basic idea there.)
I have to admit I liked it so much that when Andrew and I stopped at a Dunkin Donuts Monday morning, I asked for hot water and brewed some in a dunkin donuts cup! Incestuous, I know but so delicious.
